Paris, Down to the Frame

Architecture and craftsmanship define much of the look of AHLEM eyeglasses. But their story begins with a very Parisian influence - and not simply because its founder, Ahlem Manai-Platt, was born there. In 2013, she sat down with some friends over drinks at Café Charlot and showed them sketches for a few eyeglass frames, just for curiosity's sake. She had spent years working in fashion but had no technical background in eyewear at the time. It was her friends' reaction that convinced her those drawings might be worth turning into something real. Over the years, what began as sketches passed around a café table gradually developed into a brand that is now immediately associated with fine eyewear craft in the Frenchest of senses.

While being produced in France, a single AHLEM frame can pass through the hands of up to fifteen specialist artisans. Different workshops and craftspeople handle specialized operations - cutting, shaping, beveling, engraving, surface finishing, polishing, and final adjustment. A lot of attention is given to every stage of the process that altogether involves more than 300 individual steps. As a result, AHLEM eyeglasses hit that charmant spot between classic foundations and the call of modernity, and they always manage to feel contemporary despite never being designed around what happens to be trendy this year.

What Sets AHLEM Eyeglasses Apart?

  • Surfaces That Change with Light: The brand uses prism-like facets and the positioning of bevels to determine how light travels across their acetate frames. As you move, different planes become visible, and even a frame in a restrained color can look totally different from one angle to another.
  • Precious-Metal Finishes: Depending on the component, the company uses different kinds of electroplating, including palladium, ruthenium, and 22-karat gold. Selected pieces are also hammered by hand, which gives them a particularly fine and exquisite texture that can't go unnoticed against the very controlled geometry of every pair.
  • Custom Five-Barrel Hinges: AHLEM eyeglasses use custom five-barrel hinges equipped with a thread-lock system that is designed to keep the assembly stable. At the same time, the temples move smoothly, and the hardware becomes part of the frame's geometry.

The Design Language of AHLEM

Design-wise, there is no single frame shape that could be called typically AHLEM. The brand's collection is equally big on compact rectangles and rounded opticals, and there are some oversized frames that will definitely appeal to those who enjoy standing out. Upswept acetate shapes give way to extremely fine metal designs, giving wearers a large room for experimenting and discovering the eyewear style that feels uniquely theirs. But what connects all of AHLEM eyeglasses is the way those familiar forms are treated. Bauhaus is one of the recurring influences in the company's design history, and it eventually boils down to two elementary shapes: the triangle and the circle. Triangular geometry appears in sharp cuts, bevels, and metal edges. Circles, on the other hand, introduce softer curves and transitions. While some frames obviously favor the definition and vigor of the triangle and others take a clear turn towards the smoothness of the circular forms, the two often meet within the same design.

The references become more specific when you take a closer look at how the glasses are actually built. The company uses its own laser-engraved geometric filigree, again tapping into Bauhaus architecture for inspiration. Sharp intersections, repeated patterns, precisely cut edges, and the constant play between triangles and circles convey the idea that construction should be one with the design rather than something you should disguise. Sometimes the filigree even finds its way inside an acetate temple where it's placed discreetly to add a whimsical note to the otherwise clean build. With signature design moves like bevels milled into metal rims and temples, the juxtaposition of polished and brushed planes, or rims built from two metal rings with opposing V-shaped profiles, there is no single AHLEM silhouette that looks alike.

FAQ

Where are AHLEM eyeglasses made?

Although AHLEM is a Los Angeles-based brand, their eyeglasses are handcrafted in France by expert artisans. The process famously includes over 300 individual steps performed by different craftspeople and at different workshops.

What makes AHLEM eyewear special?

AHLEM frames are built from cotton-based 8mm-thick acetate, sculpted into bevels and facets that catch light in unexpected ways, and employ precious-metal finishes including 22K gold. Intricate milling, filigree engravings, and interplay of geometric forms combine French eyewear traditions with architectural influence.
