Silhouette Frames – Made in Austria, Since 1964
The story of Silhouette started in 1964, when Anneliese and Arnold Schmied opened a small eyewear workshop in Linz, Austria. Their goal was to create beautiful eyewear, a stylish accessory one would actually want to wear, without cutting corners on quality. In 1983, the world saw the Freeline collection – the first Silhouette rimless glasses. That was the beginning of an ongoing passion for the rimless design that still drives the brand today. That same year, they began producing eyewear from SPX plastic – a proprietary material that made it possible to create ultra-thin, light, yet durable hypoallergenic frames.
The real breakthrough came in 1999, when Silhouette Titan Minimal Art glasses made their debut. Just 1.8 grams light, this design ditched screws and hinges, using flexible titanium to adapt to each wearer. The world (and NASA) took notice. In 2000, Titan Minimal Art received NASA’s “Certified Space Technology” status and was chosen as the official eyewear for astronauts. If Silhouette eyeglasses are tough enough for space, they’re definitely tough enough for your daily commute. Today, the company is still family-owned and now in its third generation. Every pair of Silhouette glasses is still made in Austria, start to finish, with the same attention to detail.
